ALEX CHRIS's STORY

Bmw and american car enthusiast. 18 years old and im obsessed with engines. I work part time and attend college but when i do neither im either working on my cars or driving the hell out of them. My fleet: BMW 520i e39 aka stephanie , the daily driver with custom paint , crazy looks , convenient interior and a killer soundsystem (planning a 2.8L swap and 5 speed manual gearbox , forced induction aswell) BMW 330ci e46 aka melanie, the weekend sports car , pure speed and no concern for gas mileage i plan on getting a 3rd car for drifting as i plan to improve on that and im leaning towards a compact e36

Did a few visual touches to my e36 compact ...im going for the green/white look and decided to paint the grill white since it was half broken anyway. Does it look rice?

Just picked up my new car :)

Super cool, congrats.

[]Alex chris Marshall

Thank you , lots to do to it :)

Just bought a new car as a cheap daily/semi project. Its not a highly loved car among enthusiasts but i have a couple of plans for it during the summer. Its an e36 hatch from 2000 (316i compact) slow but a good platform to work on

I like E36 platform BMWs and don't understand all of the hate. They are the best size, excellent chassis, it only suffers from not being an E30 or E46. And from my perspective, the E36 was better built inside than the E46, from a quality stand point, while having more room inside than the E30 but not being huge like current 3-series cars. The biggest complaint I have is that the gearing is ridiculously long for those 4 cylinder cars, which made our stateside 4 cylinders quite slow.

[]Alex chris Marshall

I agree the quality of the e36 is very good, however the compact versions are significantly lower quality and the rear suspension is dated (E30 suspension) i would have bought an e30 but couldnt find a clean example here. The gearing does seem very long and maybe the 6 speed would be more suited for these cars but idk. Im new to the e36 scene ive always been more of e39/46 follower, but now im going to experience an odball from the e36 fleet

[]Ernie Szots

Congrats! Looking fwd to pics.

[]Alex chris Marshall

Thanks :)

Once my e46 gets sold im looking to buy a cheap manual hatch. Im thinking of golf gti mk4 however im interested , what would you suggest with this criteria? Somehing under 2 litres preferably

Sort by: BESTTOPNEWOLD

[]Robert Sixto

The MK4 Golf has pretty good aftermarket support, and it's a fun little car to drive. I would recommend avoiding the automatic transmission and opt for the manual instead. Aside from better fun factor, the autos weren't the most stout and prone to failure.

[]Alex chris Marshall

Im probably looking to buy a golf specifically a gti . Do you know how the gas milage is on those?

[]Robert Sixto

I don't recall, I had a 1.8t and if I recall correctly it was something like low to mid 20's. I want to say 24-25ish typically. That was pretty much in stock form, never really modded that one.

[]Gregory Garoppolo

This is a trick, I will have to conjure up my knowledge of cars over sees that I liked but that were never available to us here. I liked the Renault Megane, Citroen C4, Peugeot 205, Volvo C30... But I almost always end up with the VW when hunting for a hatchback.

[]Alex chris Marshall

VWs are very easy to modify and make decent power with that 1.8T

[]Gregory Garoppolo

They tend to have more room inside than similar sized hatches as well. Unless you can get your hands on a Vauhaul Astra VXR, I'm not sure what else can be built make power and be affordable like that VW. Anything else I can think of probably costs more money or has a larger engine.

If you're looking for a 2 door style hatchback then a Civic might be another good option for you. I'm not sure what some of the newer Si models go for but a normal one should be easy to come by cheaply. There's also the Pontiac Vibe/Toyota Matrix if 4 doors is acceptable and both of those have an optional all wheel drive system and are powered by a super reliable Toyota motor.

[]Alex chris Marshall

Ive been looking at civics , most of them are EK and EP civics , i preferably want 2 door and something you can get loads of parts for.

[]Ernie Szots

Was going to suggest the Yaris based on good MPG, bulletproof reliability and low price tag but if you're looking for a ton of aftermarket support for performance upgrades, then these are not the hatchbacks you're looking for lol. There are some parts for them and they can make fun momentum cars, but it's not like Civics or Golfs.

[]Alex chris Marshall

Ive driven a few yaris and they are actually pretty good cars , the new one is pretty quick down low but as you said they are mostly mpg daily cars.

The m52tub20 has been finally pulled out and the stripping down of it is in progress . Already removed the exhauat manifolds and cats , water pump pulley , ac compressor and power steering pump . Tomorow we'll continue hopefully reaching the block .

We removed the auto gearbox from the e39 today , pulling engine tomorow and then we can start the rebuild process

Vehicle for sale

$7,000

Greece

Having to sell this 330ci due to needing funds for my other project and will be needing a cheap daily to replace it , 120.000 kilometers on it , Slightly modified , car has been maintained and serviced Asking price 7,000 euros

[]Gregory Garoppolo

Oh no! I hope that the other projects better have four wheels. ;-)

[]Alex chris Marshall

My e39 is going in on monday , were doing a complete rebuild and transmision swap, so unfortunately have to sell this and look for a cheap daily , but can only be optimistic about it!

[]Gregory Garoppolo

Oh cool! Manual swap? Sometimes you have to play favorites with cars, its hard but true. I've been contemplating doing so myself recently. Any ideas for the daily?

[]Alex chris Marshall

Manual swap yes , and ive been thinking either to go bmw again with an e36 4 cyl or a seat leon which is popular here in my country.

[]Gregory Garoppolo

The Seat would be running a VW group engine right?

[]Alex chris Marshall

Yes same engine as the a3s and golfs of that era , 1.6L

[]Gregory Garoppolo

Cool! I will be interested to see how that turns out! That's such a sacrilegious swap to perform here in the states, sticking a VW engine in a BMW, but I think that those little turbo VW 4 cylinders were better engines than that 4 cylinder BMW mill.

[]Alex chris Marshall

Ive been thinking vw (seat) for a daily :) my e39 is keeping its 2 litre but im building the motor for forced induction :)

[]Gregory Garoppolo

Oh I've got you now! :-) Those Seat's are supposed to be good cars! I really miss my old hatchback VW, and I'm sure that's got similar dynamics.

[]Alex chris Marshall

Yep :) will be a cool project too as will be easier to work on than my 330ci

Its finally time to rebuild my e39 engine and swap the transmission out aswell as install the turbo kit. However all this comes at a great expense and unfortunately im having to sell the 330ci. I have a long commute everyday and i cant afford to keep feeding it gas every twice a week and i have come to the decision to sell it and utilize the money towards a cheap daily and my e39 project. I would have

[]Sac Car Scene

Cool mod Alex, how does it sound? Is it loud?

[]Alex chris Marshall

Ive got a video ready , im posting a link now . I think its loud :)

Been taking a personal break from everything but cars have had a few issues lately. My e39 , we just discivered that the intake cam was out of position and the timing was way off , which explains the sluggish feel and lack of power in the low rpms. Vanos seals have been done and car is running better than ever now. As for the e46 my valve cover gasket has gone and im burning way too much oil

Can anyone recommend a good diagnostic tool for bmws that can read specific codes , ecu codes and ABS codes etc? Got a DSC + yellow handbrake light come up so i want to figure out what i need to check... Looking for something under 150 dollars if possible!

Sort by: BESTTOPNEWOLD

[]Gregory Garoppolo

I think ECS tuning might sell a device for your car... Foxconn is the manufacturer they use, branded as Schwabben, and can be order elsewhere as a Foxconn tool. I'm not positive that they can read all of those codes, BMW, Mercedes, and Audi have a habit of making the codes hard to read without expensive computers. But I have a Schwabben scanner for my 2001 S4 and it was about $100 on sale, and it reads all of the VAGCOM codes.

[]James Henderson

I have the Foxconn for my VW, well spent money.

[]Alex chris Marshall

Ok thank you!

[]Wilson Oberholzer

If you have a laptop you can get a cheap K+CAN cable (something like this: https://www.ebay.com/itm/BMW-INPA-K-DCAN-USB-Interface-OBD2-OBDII-16-Pin-Car-Diagnostic-Tool-Cable/191837580674?epid=1263694158&hash=item2caa692d82:g:gpoAAOSweExaBB-b) and download the INPA software (used for BMW diagnostics) and have something that will do everything you need. I had pretty much that setup on my laptop for the longest time and there wasn't anything I couldn't read.

[]Alex chris Marshall

I've heard of that , i was considering it .. Do you think its better than portable scanners?

[]Wilson Oberholzer

I think it's a lot better than a portable scanner. If I recall correctly the laptop with INPA can be used to code features in/out on BMW engine and chassis management stuff and not just read error codes. It's been awhile since I've messed with it though.

[]Alex chris Marshall

Alright thanks! I'll search for it in a bit

Please say you're going to post an exhaust video of your setup? Those tips look like pure sex. I love the burned look
