AMEER 's STORY

I like cars, fights, and movies.

Didn’t really intend on buying more parts but I’ve been feeling an odd amount of movement coming from the motor & trans lately. Knock sensor is also picking up vibration whenever I come off the line or when the trans shifts. I know the shop who swapped the motor had issues with the motor mounts and had to put my old ones back in which have over 100k miles on them so as a precaution I picked up some

So I haven’t been particularly active lately alot has been going on, but we changed the spark plugs on the wrx and found that 2 of the plugs were improperly gapped & cylinder 1’s was cracked and cylinder 4s was completely broken in half. For anyone curious the gap is supposed to be 0.030 2 were at 0.045/0.046 the other two were around the proper gap. Basically the shop who swapped my motor NEVER changed the spark plugs. So

That sucks man. I’ve had to fire multiple mechanics for nonsense like this. The thing that I do that really annoys people is bringing a totque wrench to pick up my car to any new shop. I’m so freakin tired of lazy mechanics torquing lugs into oblivion, which creates the risk that I am wrestling a wheel off on the side of a busy road for absolutely no good reason. But tell a mechanic that you will be showing up with a lug wrench and it never seems to happen 🤷‍♂️

[]Timothy Markworth

The laziest mechanic in the world cringes at that. Holy smokes.

New fuel pump & filters are on. Just spark plugs, knock sensor, & smoke test next. Then gonna clean the injectors and hopefully finalize the tune.

Friendly reminder to everyone to be humble. Taking pride in your build is one thing, but going around and bragging that your car is built & not bought makes you look like a giant douche. Especially if you didn’t do the work yourself. Then it’s twice as bad. I overheard some guy bragging about how his Camaro was built & not bought and I asked him what he did to it and he said he bought it with everything

Not the best week for me or my car... Probably not gonna be posting as often for a lil while. I've been burning myself out mentally and physically working on this thing every night for the past 3 months and it seems to have finally caught up with me. So I'm gonna take a break from it for a while. Time to take a step back, re-evaluate & focus up on other things. In the mean time I may

Finally done with this crap and got the new brackets and pads on... a broken ratchet, swivel, 2 broken brackets and a week later anyway... again always check the work any shop does on your car. I’m legitimately never taking my car to a shop again for anything unless it’s for something severe. #subaru #wrx #teamwheelwell #forthebuild

It's been a long time since I have worked on a car from a region of the country where bots rust up like that. I don't miss it.

[]Ameer Idelah

I dont blame you at all. busted my knuckles up and broke my friends wrench before the sucker even budged.

[]Gregory Garoppolo

I grew up in Connecticut, I remember having to fix the car when it was 20 degrees out and everything is rust up. Nothing hurts like punching cold steel by accident.

[]Timothy Markworth

I've tried my hand at some brake work before. Space for tools is so precious. What a pain.

I see you've got some pre-mangled bolt to fight with, now.

[]Ameer Idelah

Yeah it was awful my buddy managed to break it loose finally after 2 hours. I’m just glad it’s done lol

Ameer Idelah37 days ago

2 days of penetrating oil and one broken wrench later these god damn bracket bolts will not budge. Taking a breaker bar to em if that doesn’t work... they’re turning to liquid. Didn’t think these would be that much of a pain to break honestly. I’m just tryna get this done so I can install the new fuel pump, knock sensor and spark plugs and finish the tune 😑😑

Invest in a blow torch man! I spent 6 hours fighting two bolts last summer, not including overnight PB Blaster soaking, while fixing a Subaru in the San Juan Islands, and then I bought a torch and was done 3 minutes later. Lesson learned.

[]Ameer Idelah

We did have a butane torch on hand, but were saving it as a last resort. Finally all of them broke loose eventually. I'm not looking forward to doing the rear pads and I'm gonna avoid it for as long as I can now lol

So two years ago when I first got the car and knew nothing about anything, The first thing we did to the car was replace the brakes. For a while I’ve had stopping power issues. Nothing major but noticeable enough to cause concern. At first I thought maybe it was the lines or pads. So yesterday we took the wheel off to change the front pads to find out that one of the slide pins on the passenger side

[]Ameer Idelah

Never bringing my car to a shop again lol I’m undoing everything that’s been done by everyone who’s touched it lol

[]Tobias Linder

Ouch!! That sounds serious.

[]Ameer Idelah

Yeah I’m not thrilled about having to order replacement parts now especially since I was saving for parts to run e85. I’m not even mad at the car anymore. I do however wanna take a bat to the head of everyone whos worked on it besides me and my tuner.

Ameer Idelah50 days ago

As of right now. The Subaru is doing better.. it seems to like this blend of E85 and 93. My tuner made some adjustments to the car and it seems to be alot more welcoming of a higher ethanol percentage than I thought it would be. it seems to actually prefer it if anything. Hope I’m not jinxing myself but knock has gone down significantly, air fuel is remaining stable, the car overall just seems to be happier with

If you can, get some fuel in a glass jar or something so you can let it set and see if it separates. I'm willing to bet the farm that the fuel is bad because it has water in it. Shy of having the shittiest tune ever, 93 octane with or without ethanol shouldn't be that tragic.

[]Ameer Idelah

Yeah I’m inclined to agree. I’ve never had this big of an issue with fuel before on this tune. Prior to this it was running like I dream I don’t know what happened. I know soon I may need to replace my fuel filter and maybe pump but it wasn’t nearly this extreme and it only got worse after I filled up this time. And other people came forward on the same day complaining about the same issues. It’s way too much of a coincidence. One thing I did notice that was strange was that the pump spefically told me to choose 93 octane this time instead of giving me the typical “ select your fuel” option. I didn’t think much of it I thought they were just trying to get more people to spend more money. I know ethanol content has an affect but it’s nothing this drastic and the tuner is very experienced especially when it comes to subarus and has actually been wanting me to switch to e85 for a while. So I know the tune isn’t perfect but it also can’t be responsible for this level of issues especially since other people are having the same problems I am after filling up. “ sluggish performance, air fuel readings being unstable etc”

Water contamination is probably a good bet. My main focus at the moment is to just get rid of the fuel whatever way I can but if I can get some of it in a jar I will do so to cover my bases

[]Robert Sixto

I used to seek out Shell almost exclusively, and alternate between that and Mobil, never had any issues. I avoid BP because I saw a bunch of cars come in with legitimate fuel issues when I worked at Honda, this was completely stock vehicles and it was causing lean condition issues, misfires, etc.

If you have any doubts, switch stations, find another top tier brand and see if anything changes. Who is doing your tuning? Was it running fine before a recent fill up?

[]Ameer Idelah

a friend of mine that I know very well and know knows his stuff. I know that sounds sketchy but he’s tuned 3 other cars that are all pushing far more power than mine and run fine as daily’s. I know a few people have debated as to whether or not subarus like shell but there’s no real answer as to what brand is best for what. Especially since where I live the only good suppliers are shell and speedway. He’s a “certified Cobb tuner” If that helps. As far as any issues not really I mean it had knock pop up but it was at normal low levels. We’re gonna look into the fuel filter and pump to be sure. But I know for a fact that the gas I filled up with on that day was bad because two other people contacted me complaining the bad the same issue with that station right after they got their latest shipment.

One has a terminator the other has a wrx. One even had to remove the fuel from his car because he was worried about it blowing up after he spent $62 on filling up. Another thing is the knock went up by SUBSTANTIAL numbers from the occasional -2.11 or -1.76 to consistently -4.22 and even as high as -6.33. I had to pull timing to get it to go back down but even then the AFR correction was fluctuating way too much by about 7.3 when before it was fluctuating by 0.72 at the most. and the air fuel readings were bouncing from rich to EXTREMELY lean after filling up that day. My friend with the terminator filled up with the same gas the same day and said the exact same thing was happening to his car.

I’m 100% positive It’s the location and something bad happened with the gas and it’s probably not shells fault.

[]Robert Sixto

Yeah, it happens, stuff can get contamination anywhere. You could maybe throw a gallon of E85 to help bump up octane and limit knock, but check with your tuner first of course. Otherwise, I'd baby it until you get through that tank, or more ideally drain that suspect fuel out.

[]Gregory Garoppolo

I have a couple of thoughts here for you. First is that you don't have a US market engine and international octane rating systems are different than domestic rating systems which means your car might simply want better gas than is commonly available within the USA. Second, I would bet that if it is the gas that its the ethanol component of the gas. Other countries do not do this like we do, and its well documented that particularly turbo cars don't always like 10% ethanol gasoline. I would suggest trying two things, adding octane booster pre-fill-up and also searching for a local station that is ethanol free, there's an app that does the job. Good luck!

[]Ameer Idelah

Thanks Gregory and will do! I thought initially that the JDM motor was a factor in all of this, but I’ve researched it and asked other people who’ve done the same swap and it isnt. Other people have approached me regarding the same issue and they drive cars with USDM engines. The car was running great and stable until after I filled up yesterday. And right afterwords a friend of mine who drives a mustang messaged me saying he filled up at the same station the same day and had the same problem. So i think the most probable explanation is that something is just off with that location.

Either way you’re right the ethanol content is an interesting point and I have to research it more.
I’ll continue to look into more stations and different fuel suppliers as well for future reference. Thanks again for your input

[]Gregory Garoppolo

You could absolutely have gotten some bad gas from that station too, I have had stations that I avoid in the past for that reason. I was going to try the ethanol free option myself in order to see if I noticed a difference but the stations are like 20 miles plus away from me. I hope you have better luck than I did!

Ameer Idelah58 days ago

After finding out the shop who swapped my motor filled it up with mobil 1 . I quickly ordered 5 qts of this. Haven’t used it before, but all the best subies I know either run AMSOIL, Redline, or royal purple. Piece of Advice never run mobil 1 on these Cars. And no I’m not an amsoil dealer or sponsored by amsoil in any way. I just researched it and amsoils signature series 5w30 seems like it’s

Sort by: BESTTOPNEWOLD

[]Robert Sixto

I ran Mobil 1 for many years in my 6, which is also turbo, and had zero issues. When I opened it up at 80,000 miles for a VVT actuator replacement, things inside looked super clean and healthy. That Mobil 1 5w-30 also saw quite a bit of track use for two years. I've since switched over to Shell Rotella because I decided to go a bit heavier weight and it is also cheaper. I think people get too caught up on the oil brand thing. I've heard similar in the Mazdaspeed community, Mobil 1 is bad, Rotella switched formula and is no good, etc. While one may be a bit better than the other, I find it hard to believe it's the difference between a healthy engine and a catastrophic failure, assuming the oil is changed in a timely manner.

[]Hayden Baker

Agreed. Any name brand oil is going to be a good choice for any engine as long as it is the proper weight and isn't using garbage bearings. The 370Z had a bearing issue when it was launched because Nissan tried to use a "green" bearing. It needed a special oil that was stupid expensive. On the opposite end, most BMW M motors want a very specific weight like 10W60 or something similarly uncommon. Aside from that, they're all fine. Especially Mobile 1 who is killing it with their long lasting synthetics. Do you have any proper research to back this up because I can supply you with real articles showing Mobile one doing testing on turbo charged engine. Subaru engines are ancient; so, they definitely don't have any new problems left to discover. Sounds like forum pseudo science to me.

[]Robert Sixto

Ah, I remember that Z oil thing, I always wondered about that.

It eliminates almost all of the boost lag problems that come with owning an older wrx. It bolted up to the turbo perfectly fine but didn’t fit initially because it was a few inches long I decided to have it cut and then have a 3 inch flange welded on and boom it bolted up perfectly. I

This specific Cobb downpipe was meant for a 2016 sti. Mine is a 2004 wrx. The 2016 STIs are longer than the 04s so the pipe was just a few inches too long. Otherwise it bolts up perfectly!
