VEHICLE STORY

Tell us the story behind your ride. What made you pick this particular one? Where did you find it? 3 years ago I sold my very first car, a 2000 Toyota Corolla. After which I was on the hunt for a new car. I was on Craigslist looking for something manual and I came across a 1987 Toyota Supra. The interior was super clean and the outside looked immaculate so I decided to check it out. Get to the place the car is at and my dad and I decided to take it for a test drive. My first time riding in it I realized learning manual was something i didn't know if I could handle in this car. It seemed to have so much power even though it was just a NA 7M. But that feeling of speed had me hooked, and the way it looked, I had to have it. Fast forward about a month after owning it. I'm driving it to school and notice the radiator light came on for just a split second. I think nothing of it, could just need topped off or something. I drive it home and notice this fowl smell coming from the air vents. No idea what it was so again, I thought nothing of it. I keep driving it and again, this car had 72,000 miles on it when I bought so I thought this was just nothing, I also wasn't versed on how the 7M's are notorious for blowing around this time. So anyways, driving down a busy street here and I look down and the temp gauge is almost all the way in the red I think, oh no I need to pull over. Pull over, pop the hood and what do I find? Antifreeze all over absolutely everything. Just a green mess. Didn't know what to do so I had to wait until later that night when my dad could help me get her back home. We finally do and it instantly went in the garage. Smoke billowing out of the exhaust and all. We started doing a head gasket repair on the 7M but sort of lost steam as we went on. Fast forward 2 years after, I had some money I got from a drunk driver hitting me so I knew I had to get the Supra back on the road. I had been planning an Excel document of everything I wanted to buy for the Supra, the main one being a 1JZ-GTE. THE engine to swap into this car. And for what I wanted to do with it, occasionally drifting, it was a good candidate. So I order the engine online and it shipped here in 3 days through Pitt Ohio. Now let me tell you about my Pitt Ohio experience. The driver gets here, now bear in mind it's middle of January 2017 in Indiana and it snowed really heavy the day before and day of the delivery. But the driveway he had to pull into was shoveled and everything. There's a gravel path that leads off the driveway back to a rear garage my parents have that has a lift and everything, that's where I needed the engine to be. So he starts to back into the driveway but says he can't go any further cause he "doesn't know it their is a ditch in the back yard or not that he could run into". So anyways he gets the engine delivered into the middle of the driveway and leaves. It was a bad experience. Ever since then though I've been working on this car every weekend getting it closer and closer to finally being back on the road again. I don't think I could ever sell this car as it's been something I've been wanting for a while now and it's finally going in the direction I wished it would.  Describe the modifications you've made. Where did you start,  what’s the most recent mod and what motivated it? A 1JZ-GTE because I've always wanted something with a turbo and this is a really good swap for a MK3 Supra, it practically drops right in! Also have BC Racing BR Type coilovers because I wanted coilovers on it since I got it but never had the money for it. I have some XXR 550 wheels, I know they aren't the best but I like how they look and they'll work for now. I've always wanted a BRIDE seat ever since I first saw one so I knew I had to get one. Have various engine parts like FMIC, AEM gauges, HKS BOV, and a lot of odds and ends that I got off of Driftmotion. Of all the mods you’ve made, which do you think offers the biggest bang for the buck? Can't really pick one in specific since I haven't really gotten to utilize any of them to their fullest but I'll get back to that. How did you go about selecting the specific parts for this build? Any installation tips to share? Just doing my research, seeing what other people like and seeing if they have a lot to say about it. What are you planning next? I've been considering doing maybe a carbed V8 into a Miata build but that's way down the road. What’s been the biggest challenge with this build? Time, working all week the only time I have to work on this build is on the weekends but I try and make every weekend count.
