The Story

Follow my car and our adventures around Arizona on Instagram @ obs_az instagram.com/obs_az/ Tell us the story behind your ride. What made you pick this particular one? Where did you find it? So this was my first car purchase near the beginning of 2016. The car had a little under 70,000 miles on it. Which was great all things considered. The Subaru Superstore of Chandler dealership in Arizona would once and a while give me a call asking if any newly acquired used Subaru's would fit my tastes and price range. I have always liked this specific model Impreza. The two-tone paint on the Obsidian Black Pearl model was a perfect fit, was not a big fan of the lighter colors for the model. Originally I was not going to build out this car, but being my first manual and having a mechanic itch to work on the car, the summer of 2016 is when all the installs and modding started. Describe the modifications you've made. Where did you start, what’s the most recent mod and what motivated it? So since the car is a non-turbo and running the EJ-253 engine (which is a SOHC rather than a DOHC like the EJ-255 or EJ-257) there is not a lot of engine/performance upgrades I can do to the car, really because this engine was not built to be fast or have power. What I have been doing is upgrading the suspension and framework. I foolishly started which an audio upgrade. Dumping a bunch into a really good audio build I put in the car myself. That aside, my first upgrade was the Wheels and Tires, the OEM wheels alone weigh in at 25lbs a wheel, I really needed something different. Since the market was open to literally any other wheel and tire combination. I went with the 20lb Tire Rack Sport Edition's with Extreme Contact Continentals. From there I added a Grimmspeed crank pulley and redid the shifter and transmission mounts with Kartboy and SuperPro parts. I was hooked into actually building the car from then on. Before the short shifter, the upgrades were really creature comforts. After, I saw potential in this car - not horsepower potential but ride and driver potential, emphasizing the 'Sport' in the name to mean track like sport, in handling and ride quality. My most recent major install was the hood wrap and hatch chrome delete. The Transmission was a latest major rebuild. As for car handling, I installed 22mm Whiteline swaybars front and rear (more detail in the parts lists). Of all the mods you’ve made, which do you think offers the biggest bang for the buck? The Kartboy short shifter has been the best single mod I have done to the car. Overall, replacing the driveline bushings, having less slack in the driveline, has added more throttle response at the wheels. Getting off the start and into the other gears much sooner, and giving the whole driving experience a greater sport feeling. How did you go about selecting the specific parts for this build? Any installation tips to share? I have been mostly creeping the Subaru forums looking at what other people have done their Impreza's and GH model WRX's. I decided to go with SuperPro for my bushings instead of the community favorite, Whiteline, because of the better build quality and me having a great connection with Cygnus Performance. Still a little hard to get a hold of in the states, with SuperPro being an Aussie built company. As for other parts, the reasonably best parts that will fit on my car because it fits on a GH WRX. What’s been the biggest challenge with this build? Finding parts that fit my car. The cross-referencing of OEM parts at parts.subaru.com to see if WRX parts fit on my car. Then buying the WRX performance part for my car. This process takes the longest amount of time and the fitment confidence factor is pretty low overall, so far I have had no issue. What are you planning next? I'm planning on getting all bushings changed to SuperPro, getting Megan Racing links and arms, then getting Feal 441 Road Race Spec coilover. Maybe some new exterior parts and mods.

Clean looking car. What are your plans with it? Daily or will it be heavely modded?

[]Michael Cleveland

Still my daily, still building it out. You can see my future parts lists further down, after installed.

Cool! havent seen one of the single cams modded yet. nice work

[]Michael Cleveland

Thanks! It's been a labor of love and a great experience!

[]Raymond Hardy

For a second there I thought the oil was Individual throttle bodies. But I guess not.

[]Michael Cleveland

That would be something else though. Next mod, lol? 🤔

[]Raymond Hardy

It'd definitely be interesting, You'd need to have a custom intake manifold, and then the throttles, not impossible, but it'd probably have to be custom. But it's your ride, do what you want.

[]Maylin Marlett

Nice to see another outback sport build. Not many appreciate the N/A.

I've been toying with the idea of getting 06-07 STI calipers for me bake upgrade. They would be the 3:2 piston, red calipers. I even found an adapter bracket for the back and I'd just need to cut the front dust plate. My hesitation is how much better would a 3:2 setup be on an already proper brake build to a 2:1 piston caliper setup? I'd be getting SS lines, street/track pads, street rotor blanks, Motul fluid,

There is a new filter on the Rides page to help you find certain types of mods, here's every 2009 with brake mods https://wheelwell.com/Subaru/Impreza/2009?part_category=brakes&sort_key=mod_score

[]Sammie Robertson

If you decide to upgrade, be sure to add it to your parts list!

[]Michael Cleveland

Definitely, will make a whole write up about the experience! 👍

So I uploaded some new pictures of the car with the Carbon Vinyl Wrap. It looks like though what ever compression or conversion Wheelwell uses REALLY doesn't like the carbon texture!! LMAO

[]Andrew Johnson

It's the first active motion vinyl wrap!

[]Michael Cleveland

You got me! It's actually a morphic membrane lol it vibrates fast enough that solids don't get through! 😂 haha

[]Chad Ploski

Looks like its vibrating!

[]Andrew Johnson

Hmm, yeah it does look a little weird - like organic tree rings or something haha. Still looks cool thought!
