1. Tell us the story behind your ride. What made you pick this particular one? Where did you find it? I bought my WRX in 2017 after trading in a 2014 Civic Si. We were looking at adding to the family and the 2-door wasn’t going to cut it. I’ve always wanted a WRX since the 2004/2005 models came out and started hunting for one in January 2017. I ended up going with this one because 1) it was a 1-owner car, and 2) it was in my price range that we could afford payments on. A buddy and I ended up driving to Dallas to pick it up and road tripped back to Austin from there. 2. Describe the modifications you have made. Where did you start, what’s the most recent mod and what motivated it? Most of the mods follow the typical timeline of what most people do with the car. It started with upgrading the short shifter to a Kartboy model with the upgraded bushings and installing a backup camera and touchscreen head unit for more entertainment features. From there I learned there was a Cobb downpipe already installed on the car so I purchased the Cobb Stage 1+ kit with the intake and Accessport and pretty much stopped with any power mods at that point. Outside of that, wheels and tires were upgraded as well at the suspension being switched out for BC Racing Coils. I’ve also added in some bracing here and there for functional support as well as started replacing bushings with Whiteline pieces as needed. As far as the most recent mod, that would be the vortex generator on the roof. No real motivation behind it, I got a great deal on it and figured why not. Not all mods need to be functional. 3. Of all the mods you’ve made, which do you think offers the biggest bang for the buck? As goofy as it might be, the Fumoto Drain valve on my oil pan is probably the one I would go with. Cuts down my oil change time, less mess, and it’s easier to access in a pinch. Outside of that, maybe the Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires; they offer great grip in all conditions I deal with. Very confidence inspiring. 4. How did you go about selecting the specific parts for this build? Any installation tips to share? Of course some of the selection was based on places like YouTube and NASIOC, but a lot of it had to do with thinking about what was going to offer gains where I needed them. Some things were purchased solely because I wanted them, but others had a specific purpose. I usually spend a lot of time researching what others like or dislike about certain parts, comparing reviews, and also asking my friends who also modify their rides as to what they see value in. Install wise, plan for more time than needed, ask for help if you can get it. Lifts are your friend, and read everything you get for instructions at least 2-3 times before diving in. 5. What’s been the biggest challenge with this build? 100% the biggest challenge is not going crazy buying new parts. Outside of that, I would say it’s got to be ensuring that you stay smart and be proactive with caring for the car just as you would anything else. This ride is on its 2nd motor, 5 months into ownership it spun a rod bearing and needed a new short block, so I’m very attentive to when things are off or need to be monitored. 6. What are you planning next? Next would probably be motor mounts and also some general maintenance of course. I’m also looking to swap out the exhaust for something with a little more volume and I’m planning some decent suspension changes to allow for more control over the ride quality and handling characteristics since I enjoy cars that handle well. I am not a big power person, so eventually the car will be tuned, but it’ll be conservative and go for reliability instead of big numbers.
