No Replacement for Efficient Displacement

We have all seen, heard and loved the torque and grunt that comes with most larger displacement engines. With that being said I'd love to hear your thoughts on cars with less than 2.5 Liters . I've always liked the idea of a smaller and lighter package making big power for its size. So what are your favorite little cars and would you ever consider a smaller engine over a larger one ? And if so under what circumstances ?
