Ever since I bought my 128i last May, I had intentions of putting on a new steering wheel. I dislike the idea of holding a piece of leather that someone else touched for 36k miles.
My buddy, Lightwerkz, has been using Coby Wheel BMW for a while on his e46 m3, e90 m3, and more recently on his e39 m5. I always liked the fit and finish and decided to put one on my little 1 series.
What to order? I wanted black alcantara since I do not like the grey BMW Alcatraz material. I wanted a stitch to match the BMW Performance Shift boot I also got. And finally, I wanted the yellow stripe at the 12 o'clock mark. No this wheel doesn't have a quick release, but I love the little homage to BMW Motorsports.
The install was painless. Make sure the steering wheel and front wheels are absolutely straight. It sucks that you can't lock the steering wheel in place, but gotta live with it. Undo the negative terminal with a 10mm socket. Release the spring clips on both sides of the steering wheel through the small slits. Pull the airbag out. Undo the plugs and use torx bits to remove the plastic trim. And reinstall.
Love the look and love the extra thickness.
