The Story

When I turned 18, I set out to buy a good first vehicle for myself. After hating my mom’s car for so long, I decided that I wanted a Camaro like my dad had. Then after realizing the practicality of a Camaro in northern Illinois and Wisconsin winters, I decided a truck would be the way to go. I always loved the old Ram Charger my dad had, but I am a bowtie guy, and it just wasn't for me. So I went looking for my dream truck. I found a 1985 Chevy Blazer for sale on craigslist about week into my search. It wasn’t a K5 like the rest of the old ratty Blazers on there; it was the D10 military spec m1009. I took one look at it and knew I had to have it. So I called up Mike E. (the previous owner), who lived about three hours south of me. He told me that the truck was bought from military auction and that it had a jillion miles on it. He basically used it as a workhorse around his farm, so he was selling it cheap. I had my buddy drive me down there to test-drive it, and by the time we made it, it was dark. So I looked it over, started it up and took it down an old backroad. It felt just right. I got it back and said, “I’ll take it.” Handed him the cash, signed the title over and blasted down the road to get it home. No radio or interior; I sang to myself on the way home. But you couldn't wipe the grin off my face if you tried. My buddy and I painted it black with ebony stone black housepaint in the Walmart parking lot at 2 am. Over the following summer, I wrenched on it every opportunity I got, and still do. It’s a work in progress, but so far I have tuned the injection pump, cut the exhaust off and straight-piped it, added a radio, put bigger tires on it and made a million tiny changes and things to keep it running like a top. I have big plans for my baby, but here she is as she sits right now. This story won’t end anytime soon, but I couldn’t be more proud of owning anything. When I start it and hear that old Detroit come to life and rattle the world around it, it still makes me grin ear to ear. When I have a long day at work or just need to wind down, it’s there for me. It’s been wheeled hard in the woods, the mud and the snow. I can honestly say that nothing has impacted my life the way this truck has, and you couldn’t get me to sell it if you waived a million dollars in my face
